Building the Future . . . Together

With your support, the Lower 9th Ward Homeownership Association has become widely known for its work with Road Home, Louisiana's program for rebuilding homes after Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, the Road Home Program will be closing soon. For a moment I thought we had done all we could do

But neighborhood residents showed me otherwise.

  • First Ms. Galethea and her sister, Ms. Cynthia, whose home we helped rebuild, decided we needed to hire them as community organizers.

  • Then we began working with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority, which owns 600 properties in our area, to make sure they become homes for neighborhood residents.

  • Next a neighborhood steering committee invited a team from the American Institute of Architects to help us develop a vision for the future of our community-and immediate steps we can take to get there.

And all of a sudden, we are building a future for the Lower 9th Ward. To learn more of what the future holds, please read our new report, Building the Future Together.

To become part of this future, I invite you to join the KREWE OF HOUSE THE 9 --

a community of sustaining donors who will provide the strong financial foundation we need for the next phase of the neighborhood's recovery.

Join the Krewe of House the 9 TODAY by donating at www.L9wha.org/donate.

DONATE BY DECEMBER 31 AND YOUR GIFT WILL RECEIVE A 50% MATCH!

As we launch our new Krewe, I've been thinking about our work in light of the current climate--our national climate and also the actual, physical, warming of our globe. What I'm realizing is that every single one of us, every single day, needs to develop a practice, like the practice of yoga--or the practice of brushing our teeth every morning--a practice of doing what we can to respond to the current climate. I think these are the pieces of that practice:

- Make personal choices to minimize our own contribution to climate change

- Contact our public officials, donate, write letters, let our voices be heard

- Care for those who are most affected by climate change, those who have been hit hardest by disasters because of their economic status and the color of their skin.

A gift to the Lower 9th Ward Homeownership Association is one way to do this--one very direct and personal thing you can do to heal the world in this difficult time.

I thank you so much for your boundless support for the people of the Lower 9th Ward and look forward to welcoming you to the Krewe of House the 9.
